Pensioner, 86, dies after crashing car

A man died and an elderly woman has been critically injured in a collision on a South Yorkshire road.

The fatally injured man, aged 86, was driving along Doncaster Road, Ardsley, Barnsley, when police said he lost control of his vehicle and struck a lamppost.

He was driving in the direction of Barnsley and was near the Stockyard Flats when the collision occurred on Sunday afternoon.

Police said his white Toyota Carina hit a lamppost in the central reservation area.

Paramedics raced to the scene and rushed the OAP, from the Sycamore Street area of Barnsley, to the Northern General Hospital in Sheffield, where he died several hours later.

His female passenger, aged 78, and from the Doncaster Road area of Ardsley, was also taken to the Northern General and was in a critical condition yesterday with a fractured vertebrae and two broken ribs.

Police investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision want to hear from witnesses.

They want to hear from anyone who saw the Toyota Carina before the collision.

A police spokeswoman said: “A white Toyota Carina was travelling along Doncaster Road towards Barnsley when the driver apparently lost control of the car and struck a lamppost in the central reservation.”
