I WOULD like to correct a reference in the Star ( February 22) to Sheffield Anti-Cuts Alliance’s plans for a rally and demonstration on Saturday March 12 against the LibDems during their party conference in Sheffield.
We are in fact planning a massive peaceful protest with national speakers including UNITE general secretary Len McCluskey and CWU deputy general secretary David Ward. We are encouraging all Sheffielders who feel betrayed by Sheffield MP Nick Clegg and the Lib Dems to come along with their families and enjoy a positive and peaceful expression of protest on the day.
Many Sheffielders put their faith in the LibDems during the election only to find that trust betrayed by them when they formed a coalition with the Tories.
We are entitled to be angry and if the Lib Dems want to come to Sheffield we will give them the welcome they deserve.
However, contrary to your article we did not endosre “direct action” at our meeting in February.
You refer to some draft minutes provided by a volunteer at the meeting which are inaccurate and have not been endorsed.
There was a discussion on “direct action” at the meeting, with some particpants supporting the idea but with the overwhelming majority against.
In the end we agreed that SACA would organise a peaceful and orderly demonstration and rally on the day which is safe for families and children to participate.
