Pay bonus to save industry
WE welcome Master Cutler Martin Howell's suggestion that local business chiefs could be willing to take over Corus's South Yorkshire operations, if Indian steel maker Tata decides to sell.
You need to look no further than companies like Sheffield Forgemasters and DavyMarkham to see what can happen when the dead hand of a multinational corporation has its stranglehold removed and local talent is given full control.
But we should also recognise that, if Tata does decide, at some stage, to dispose of Corus Engineering Steels, there will be a need for the British Government to provide financial assistance for a new owner.
There is a view that we would be further on the road to recovery if taxpayers' cash had been invested in manufacturing, instead of being lavished on clueless bankers, their outrageous bonuses and failed financial wheezes – which even their overpaid bosses, in particular, could never comprehend.
Were we in France, you could be sure that – irrespective of European rules on state subsidies – there would be cash to preserve vital such industries as steel.
Why not pay a banker's bonus to the British civil servant who finds a way to achieve that laudable aim?
Rubbish can be a profitable business
WHERE there's muck there's money - and jobs! That is the optimistic message from Rotherham recycling firm Sterecycle which has unveiled imaginative plans to create 300 jobs and invest 200 million by building five new recycling plants in various locations around the country.
The firm is behind a new system to turn household waste into re-usable materials. Organic rubbish becomes a fibre which can be used for a variety of purposes. Other waste is sterilised so it can be readily recycled.
This is a firm showing true innovation which has already been adopted by a handful of councils. With waste management and recycling issues moving ever higher up the public and political agenda we can see a profitable future in rubbish!
