Passenger dies after police chase

A BACK seat passenger in a car being pursued by police down the motorway in North Derbyshire died after plunging off the road and down an embankment.

The Vauxhall Corsa was being followed after failing to stop for officers, when it lost control at junction 29A of the northbound carriageway of the M1.

It left the road and collided with the bank, killing the rear seat passenger.

An independent Police Complaints Commission investigation is now underway into the circumstances surrounding the smash, which happened at 2.03am today.

Any witnesses should contact Derbyshire police on 0845 123 3333.
