DRAGONS, lions and girls in authentic garb will bring colour to a parade through Sheffield next week to mark Chinese New Year.
The event starts at noon on Saturday, January 21, and celebrates the arrival of the Year of the Dragon.
It will begin with dragon and lion dances outside the Town Hall where the Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Coun Sylvia Dunkley, will take part in an initiation ceremony for the dragon. A procession will then travel along Pinstone Street, The Moor and London Road with the dragons and lions sending New Year blessings to shops along the route.
On Monday, January 23, a show at Sheffield City Hall will feature Chinese music and colourful authentic costumes, with the Chengdu Art and Cultural Troupe travelling from China to perform.
The annual event is organised by Sheffield Chinese Community Centre with backing from The University of Sheffield, the Lai Yin Association and Sheffield Council.
On January 29 The Sheffield Chinese School will hold a celebration at Montgomery Hall, Surrey Street, with festive food and a cultural show.
And on February 7 the Sheffield Chinese Association has organised a karaoke banquet at Wong Ting Chinese Restaurant in Sheffield city centre. Tickets are £25 each. Log on to sheffieldchineseschool.org
