Parking scheme 'will finish our business'

A SHEFFIELD businesses woman fears her barber's shop will have to close if a proposed council parking scheme is implemented.

Emma Lee, owner of Emms Barbers, on Leppings Lane, claims the planned Hillsborough permit scheme will leave nowhere for her customers or staff to park.

Roads in the proposed zone, which includes Penistone Road to the east, Bradfield Road and Holme Lane to the south, Kendal Road and Marcliffe Road to the west and Leppings Lane to the north, will all be affected if the scheme is accepted.

Businesses and residential properties in the designated area will be allowed a maximum of two parking permits.

A single permit for a business will cost 30 a year with a second 60. Homeowners will have to shell out 10 a year for one and 20 for a second.

Miss Lee, aged 36, who commutes from Chapeltown, said: "We have three members of staff travelling long distances to get to work but we are only allowed two permits.

"When we asked the council about it they just said that it was an inconvenience."

She fears her customers will have nowhere to park.

"They won't be able to get near the shop when they come so we will lose customers - it will finish us."

Sheffield Council has set up a number of similar parking schemes in the city which aim to stop commuters clogging up streets and leaving residents nowhere to park.

Peter Illingsworth, the manager of the barbers, said: "We've carried out a survey of our customers and of the hundreds of people we questioned there was only one person who thought the scheme was a good idea.

"There are so many more important traffic problems that need sorting out in Hillsborough. But they are just focusing on this because it is making them money.

Mr Illingsworth, who commutes from Penistone, shares Miss Lee's concerns about the impact on the business.

He said: "It will finish us, simple as that. The council talk about keeping people in work but that doesn't seem to be the case if you commute a long distance to work."

Coun Ian Auckland, Sheffield Council Cabinet member for Business,

Transport and Skills, said: "We are still consulting on the parking permit zone proposals for this part of Hillsborough. There will be further opportunities for people to comment.

"Our officers will be happy to discuss arrangements for businesses in that area to find satisfactory ways of ensuring the scheme works effectively for everyone, if it is agreed."

The Highways Committee discuss the scheme in September in September with a public consultation in autumn.
