TWO men are seriously ill in hospital after they were punched and kicked in an unprovoked city centre attack.

The victims, both aged 24, were walking along Holly Lane with one of their girlfriends towards West Street in Sheffield at around 2.30am yesterday, when one was attacked by another man.

The second victim then went to help, but he too was attacked, this time by a group of thugs.

Following the assault, the culprits walked away towards Barkers Pool.

Acting Det Sgt Andy Shaw, from South Yorkshire Police, said: “This attack was vicious, sustained and we believe unprovoked.

“They were punched and kicked repeatedly while laid on the ground. The families of these men are understandably very upset.”

The suspects are described as black or mixed race, of medium build and in their early-to-mid 20s. The two victims sustained multiple injuries and are recovering in hospital.
