Painting of our terrific castle

here it is: the long-lost artist’s reproduction of Sheffield Castle in all its imagined glory. Not bad, is it?

There’s another in Kelham Island Museum, slightly damaged by flooding in 2007 and requiring restoration and careful positioning.

The one seen above is to be ‘kept in the public domain’ but that makes me scratch my bearded chins and furrow my ploughed forehead.

It’s hardly been prominent before and it is Sheffield Castle, so it belongs in Sheffield, surely. Besides, I’ve had a request for a copy to be displayed in our renovated Turret House at Manor Lodge (see exhibition on Central Library’s first floor).

Now, thanks to the public- spiritedness of the University of Sheffield’s Archaeology Department (never met such a nice a bunch of ‘diggers’ since the Aussie Army) and our last and current Lord Mayors, a reconstruction of the castle gateway is going up in the Lord Mayor’s Parlour.

Good news - and don’t we need it? Be nice to see that medieval pot from the site at the corner of Norfolk Row.

Be like Whitby

I NEVER get over the beauty of Whitby. The streets are so clean, no rubbish, no dog poo, just lovely clean streets. Why can’t we be like this?
