Owls to pay tribute to soldier tonight

FANS will honour fellow Wednesdayite Corporal Liam Riley, killed in Afghanistan last week, at the Owls home match against Blackpool tonight.

The 21-year-old soldier, who lived in Killamarsh, was killed by a roadside bomb in Helmand Province while trying to save the life of Lance Corporal Graham Shaw, 27, who was fatally wounded by a similar device just moments earlier.

The dedicated lifelong Owls supporter will be honoured with a minute's applause before kick-off and flags at the stadium will fly at half mast.

Wednesday players will also wear black armbands as a mark of respect for the Yorkshire Regiment soldier.

Cpl Riley's father Mick and brother Jonjo are both expected to be at tonight's game.

Sheffield Wednesday chairman Lee Strafford said: "Liam was a big Owls fan, along with most of his family, and our thoughts are with his loved ones at this difficult time.

"We have been in contact with Liam's relatives and we feel it is right to honour this brave young man."
