CELEBRITIES like Madonna and Sting love yoga for helping them to achieve a long, lean and strong body.

And as word's spread about the benefits. gyms and church halls are packed with people from all walks of life, learning the ancient postures and breathing techniques to improve the body, mind and spirit.

Now Sheffield Wednesday's footballers are the latest to give yoga a try, with the focus on build up their strength.

Teacher Chris Noon, from the Sheffield Yoga School, is putting the Championship side through their paces to see if the exercises can help the team get back on track after a spate of injuries.

Chris, who practises hatha yoga, devised a routine to help the players with their flexibility and to work on their core strength.

And after the first session he was impressed.

"They did really well and they are quite flexible. I'm focusing on core strength to develop the deep postural core muscles, knee strength and generally on the spine," he said.

The players who had their first sessions with Chris also gave the lesson the thumbs up.

New signing Mikkel Bischoff, who has played in Denmark, said: "It was quite good. I've never tried anything like this before. Some of the exercises are the same as the core exercises we do normally. It could help."

Republic of Ireland Under 21 international Glenn Whelan said: "A lot of the lads want to try it. We've had a long season, and hopefully it can improve us.

"I've spoken to a few people about it. It's really good for stretching the hamstrings. We've had a lot of problems with backs as well. Hopefully it can help us with those sort of things."

Scottish midfield man Burton O'Brien was open minded and said time would tell if the sessions were useful.

He said: "Time will tell. The manager is concerned with the amount of injuries we get. This is one of the ways of tackling it.

"We're doing it for a trial period until the end of the season. If it works, maybe we will continue with it next season. It's a new experience for the boys."
