SHEFFIELD Wednesday has been granted permission for a ‘very ambitious’ project to create a sport and fitness centre which could be used by thousands of people each year.
Councillors have granted permission for the scheme by the club’s Community Programme on the former Presto Tools site on Penistone Road, Owlerton.
The centre, which will cost £7 million, is to include indoor and outdoor football pitches, a gym, dance and boxing studio, education space and changing rooms. There will also be office space for local businesses.
Members of the council’s west and north planning board gave approval subject to minor highways conditions.
Committee member Coun Mazher Iqbal said: “Although I’m a Blades fan, I’d like to congratulate Sheffield Wednesday on an very ambitious proposal.”
Spencer Taylor, Wednesday’s corporate and social responsibility manager, said: “We are delighted that the council has sanctioned our proposals.
“Our vision will now become a reality.”
Sheffield Wednesday chairman, Milan Mandaric, said: “We are very proud here at Sheffield Wednesday to be part of such an important project in this community.”
Building is expected to begin this summer, with a completion date around the middle of next year.
About 90 full and 15 part-time jobs could be created, including a small number at the new offices.
