SHEFFIELD Wednesday mascot Ozzie Owl had to make a flying visit to hospital after getting a clip around the ear at Saturday’s game with Hartlepool.
Shocked fans looked on as the 6ft-plus pot-bellied owl appeared to be felled by a fan during the half-time interval.
The feathered mascot - whose identity is a closely kept secret - then made his way shakily across the pitch before heading out of the ground towards an awaiting ambulance.
The club today confirmed he was taken to the Northern General Hospital and given the all clear - and will be back for the next home match.
Owls communication director Trevor Braithwait said: “It was a complete accident.
“As usual Ozzie had been frolicking at the side of the pitch and was messing about with fans in the stand.
“As he turned he was accidentally caught a blow around the head and as he tried to climb over the perimeter back on to the pitch he lost his balance and fell over.
“There was nothing malicious intended.
“But as Ozzie suffered what could have been a head injury we decided it was best to get him checked out.”
n A Wednesday fan in his 40s suffered a broken leg when he fell on to concrete from the raised area of the Kop at the North Stand end.
The club say the fan ran down steps after Wednesday scored and tripped or slipped and fell around 8ft to the steps below.
Mr Braithwait said: “He was lucky he didn’t fall full force on his head. However he did suffer a broken leg and we wish him a speedy recovery.”
He said the area where the fan fell had been checked by council inspectors who found all safety requirements had been complied with.
