SHEFFIELD Wednesday fans today urged fellow supporters to get behind new manager Dave Jones to help the club kick on.
Owls fans and celebrity supporters made the rallying call after the former Cardiff boss was appointed as Gary Megson’s successor.
Most were still stunned at the sudden departure of Megson on Wednesday.
Brightside and Hillsborough MP David Blunkett was one of those who thanked Megson and wished him well.
But he added: “Equally, Dave Jones will need all of our support if in the remaining games of the season we are to get ourselves out of this division and start the climb back to the Premier League.
“I hope players and the fans will provide the kind of commitment we saw, ironically, in Gary’s last game against Sheffield United.”
John Hemmingham, leader of the Kop Band which play at Hillsborough, called on fans to back Jones.
He said: “I think we’ve just got to get behind him and Sheffield Wednesday supporters will get behind him because he’s done nothing wrong, all he’s done is take a cracking job in football.”
John McClure, lead singer of Reverend and The Makers, said: “If Dave Jones can galvanize the club and get us up I think the Megson decision will have been positive but if he doesn’t it’s going to be a bad decision.
“So Mandaric has put his neck on the line.”
Some fans said it had been the wrong time to change - others were waiting to see the results before making a verdict.
Machinist Andy Walker, 38, of Stannington, said: “All Dave Jones has got to do is take us up and the fans will be happy.”
