Owls fan’s view: We must take another step forward

One step forward and two giant steps back.

Any Wednesdayites who believed the first win of the season would be the start of a decent run were brought up short at Pride Park, writes Steve Walmsley.

Just as at Barnsley we lost the battle in midfield, but Derby were a better side who didn’t let us back into the game, they were able to carve us open almost at will. Our back four isn’t the most secure at the best of times but without protection they are easy enough to pick apart, particularly with Zayette and Reda in his current form.

DJ told us that everything had been fine in training and he couldn’t understand what happened or explain it.

The blame was heaped squarely on the shoulders of the players with threats of them playing in the international break friendlies (which didn’t happen).

It might be appropriate to blame the players for a lack of application, effort and weak mentality but who signed them (10 of the starting 11 were players he has given contracts to), and who prepared them for the game?

And then of course it was all down to a virus - where was the strength in depth, and why didn’t he change it before Derby scored?

So we are in the unenviable position of having an owner who doesn’t want to put any more money in (his choice and no criticism from me) and no alternative in sight, hence the club has borrowed £3.5m from Terry Brown.

We have a manager who has presided over a run of seven straight defeats, one of nine games without a win and another of two wins in 19 games, and we are the only team in the whole 92 yet to keep a clean sheet this season. After MM’s recent comments surely any less than a win against Huddersfield tomorrow will be the end for DJ?
