It was a case of the Sky’s the limit for Owlerton Stadium after a national TV audience tuned in to witness some of the city’s top dogs in racing action.

A bumper crowd of more than 1,100 people turned out to watch the final of The Coors Light 3 Steps to Victory race event - which was shown live on Sky Sports along with six other major races.

Hather George, trained by Charlie Lister OBE, was crowned champion of the 660m race winning £7,000. Second place went to Jazz Tilly and Romeo Recruit finished third.

The Coors Light 3 Steps to Victory is run over three distances – the first leg is contested over 480m, the semi-finals over 500m, with the final taking place over 660m.

Peter Clarke, assistant general manager at Owlerton Stadium, said: “It was fantastic to see so many people, including the Sky Sports TV cameras, at the stadium for what is the only tri-distance race of its kind in the greyhound racing calendar.

“The Coors Light 3 Steps to Victory is a tough event, with the heats run over 480m and the semi-finals over 500m, so for a greyhound to make the final is an achievement in itself.

“Jazz Tilly and Romeo Recruit put in brave performances but Hather George tackled the six bends to deservedly claim the 3 Steps to Victory crown.”

In a busy week of sport, Owlerton also hosted two important stock and banger car racing events.

The Steel City Championship and The Battle of Britain Unlimited Banger event were both run at the track.
