A ‘Scamnesty’ on fake lotteries, get-rich-quick schemes and deceptive prize draws netted a staggering 1,500 letters in Derbyshire.
Officials were overwhelmed by the response after residents handed in scam letters at libraries.
Coun Carol Hart, the county council’s cabinet member for communities, said: “It shows the size of the problem that trading standards officers face.”
The top five scams were worthless prize draws, foreign lottery scams, bogus health products, clairvoyants and advance fee scams, where people are fooled into transferring money to obtain a non-existent inheritance or payment.
Officers are investigating two cases where individuals were repeatedly targeted – one person received more than 1,000 letters in a year.
The fake mail will be handed to the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau.
