An overweight Sheffield mum had almost given up on her health when she found herself suffering with diabetes, arthritis and heart problems.

Pamela Amour got a wake-up call when she was unable to carry out even simple tasks such as cleaning and shopping without pain.

The 43-year-old decided to take action and was referred by her GP to Sheffield City Trust’s Exercise Referral scheme.

In June 2014, Pamela completed a 12-week exercise programme at Ponds Forge – the first step on a 10-month journey which has seen her shape up, lose weight and become a new woman.

The mum-of-two, from Woodhouse, said: “I was putting on more and more weight, which was causing extreme pain on my knee and hip joints. I’d just about given up on myself.

“I didn’t know what to expect. I was very unfit when I started but the instructors created a fantastic, tailor-made programme based on my health problems.”

After completing the programme, Pamela got the exercise bug and joined the Fitness Unlimited gym membership scheme. She now takes part in at least four classes a week at Ponds Forge.

She said: “Just under a year on after my initial referral, I’ve lost a stone and I’m now doing two aerobics classes, a body pump class and a Legs Bums and Tums class every week. I’ve also taken up running and do an average of three miles, twice a week.

“By coming to the gym my confidence has grown more and more and I’ve made a lot of new friends. Some are older, some are younger, but we all support each other.

“My 16-year-old daughter, Molly Butterworth, is also a huge encouragement and we enjoy going to the gym together at weekends and in the school holidays.”

Lucy Annandale, exercise referral specialist, said: “Pamela has come a long way. She has energy and enthusiasm which can be very infectious to those around her.

“The scheme provides everyone with a platform from which to grow and challenge themselves to achieve more than they think is possible, Pamela certainly has proven this. She also encourages others. She should be, as I am, very proud of her achievements so far.”
