More than 55,000 drivers in Sheffield have racked up penalty points on their licences – one of the worst rates in the country.

A total of 56,288 motorists in the city have points on their licence – behind Birmingham with 68,656 and Nottingham with 64,705.

Nationally, some 8,600 drivers have 12 or more points on their licence but are still legally allowed on the roads, a Freedom of Information request found.

The Doncaster DN4 postcode has 17 drivers with 12 or more points on their licence who are still driving – one of the highest figures in the country.
