Outrage at plans to charge motorists
PROPOSALS to start charging motorists to drive into Sheffield city centre have been roundly condemned from just about all quarters.
Andy Nolan, Sheffield Council's head of environmental strategy, last week identified congestion charging as one way in which Sheffield could help reduce its carbon footprint.
But the ruling Labour party quickly stamped on the idea, saying the city's economy was too fragile to cope.
And many Star readers were also horrified with the idea they could effectively be taxed to enter their own city centre.
Most were indignant with the idea they should be charged to drive on roads they already pay road tax to maintain, yet are often bumpy and potholed.

Now the opposition Lib Dems have also condemned the suggestions.
Lib Dem environment spokesperson Simon Clement-Jones said: "We don't think that congestion charging is appropriate for Sheffield at this time.
"There are no alternatives in place. The Government has not invested in our public transport.
"Our tram extensions were turned down and the buses still need sorting out.
"We agree that the economy is not strong enough at the moment. We don't want to endanger any green shoots of recovery."
Sheffield's Green Party also criticised the proposals saying public transport was not good enough to support a ban.
Coun Jillian Creasy said: "We can't think about it until public transport is re-regulated.
"The reason it is possible in London is that their buses were never deregulated, and so they have always had a half-decent service as they are able to plough back the profits into public transport
"Until we can do the same then charging is not on our agenda."
The report into how Sheffield can reduce its carbon footprint is due to be discussed at a meeting tomorrow.
