A HEARTBROKEN mum who battled in vain to save her 12-year-old daughter in a tragic drowning at home today spoke of the family’s devastation.
Gabrielle Smith is thought to have had a seizure while taking a bath, fallen unconscious and slipped below the water’s surface.
The alarm was raised by her 10-year-old best friend, who was on a sleepover at Gabi’s Ecclesall home.
Gabi’s frantic mother Faye Smith broke down the bathroom door and attempted resuscitation, while Gabi’s 16-year-old brother Zach dialled 999 for an ambulance.
Although the first responder and ambulance crew all fought valiantly to resuscitate her, Gabi - a Year 7 pupil at Notre Dame school - could not be revived.
She was pronounced dead after arriving at Sheffield Children’s Hospital, where she one day hoped to work as a doctor.
“Words cannot begin to express the devastation we feel at losing our darling Gabi – the light of our lives, beautiful inside and out,” said Faye.
Gabi had been given the all-clear at a check-up only three weeks ago after being admitted to hospital following a previous seizure last May.
