on February 23, you featured the article ‘Three is the magic number’ and spoke of the mother of triplets who said she has fibromyalgia.
This set me thinking that it is some time since your paper covered the disease.
Jacqueline in the article is wonderful to be able to cope with everything especially as this is a dreadful disease – many sufferers can’t even step out of bed.
What makes me angry is that here in the Sheffield area there are no facilities where fibromyalgia people can get help. We have no consultants that can treat fibromyalgia because they are not trained to do so.
However, they can diagnose it then have it referred to a self help group such as ours.
Not all practitioners are sympathetic to us so we often end up feeling so low that it could make sufferers feel suicidal, as at one time it did me. To be fair to doctors it is very difficult to diagnose because there are many symptoms involved. It is a bit of a dilemma for them.
However, I have seen a small improvement as there is more awareness.
Our May Awareness Day is on May 12. This date was chosen as the world-wide awareness day as it is the birthday of Florence Nightingale.
Please have a look at our website (www.sheffieldfms.org.uk) to find out more about fibromyalgia. We believe that bringing awareness to all those unsuspecting people with this disease is a great help.
