No longer will South Yorkshire be able to lay claim to having the world’s best football referee within its midsts.
Rotherham’s Howard Webb has blown the final whistle on an illustrious career to become technical director of the body that oversees professional football officials.
We’re sure Howard will bring the same expertise and dedication to that role as he did when refereeing more than 500 Premier League and Football League fixtures since 2003. Add to that eight international tournaments, including two World Cups and two European Championships and it’s easy to see why he is held in such high regard across the footballing world.
The crowning glory came in 2010 when Howard became the first referee to be appointed to the Champions League and World Cup finals in the same year.
Despite having a very busy diary Howard always remembered his roots. His first match after the World Cup final between Spain and Holland was a Rotherham Charity Cup tie at Thrybergh Rec.
With his down-to-earth attitude Howard was always able to keep he Premier League egos.
Howard, we wish you well with the next chapter in your career.
