Have your say

It was the words that Kell Brook had been waiting for all his life.

As soon as he heard ‘And the new...’ he knew he’d beaten the odds and was bringing the IBF world welterweight title back to Sheffield from America.

Brook’s world title win over American Shawn Porter, in Carson, California in the early hours of yesterday was a demonstration of mind over matter.

Early in the fight he found himself on the back foot but he hung in there and his majority decision victory in 12 gruelling rounds over Porter will finally have made world boxing sit up and take notice.

As our sports editor Bob Westerdale says
today, America now knows who he is. And will want to see more.

Fame and fortune may await the 28-year-old now but the level-headed Kell will be the first to thank his team at the famous St Thomas’ gym in Wincobank, run by the Ingle family.

From Brendan, to Brook’s current trainer Dominic the Ingles have forged some brilliant fighters over the years with Brook just the latest to light up the world.

It’s not every day that Sheffield can celebrate a new world champion so to Kell go our congratulations on winning the big one.

Here’s to many successful defences!
