Opinion: PC must stay behind bars

Have your say

A POLICE chief once said to me: ‘there is only one thing I hate more than criminals, and that’s police officers who are criminals.’

But there are police criminals and then there’s Pc Jonathan Leonard Webb – a man charged with upholding the law and protecting the public who saw fit to try to fleece a 94-year-old widow of all she had.

The 41-year-old low-life ultimately got his grubby mitts on £24,000 after meeting the vulnerable pensioner via the job.

After being violated by the one man she thought she could absolutely trust, the lady has understandably withdrawn from society, not believing there is another soul in the world she can trust.

As you’d expect, the police and indeed Webb’s former colleagues have lambasted him as an utter disgrace to the uniform; I say he’s a disgrace to humankind.

If there is any justice in the world, the six-year prison term meted out to this coward must be served in its entirety. Nothing less will do.

Judge Guy Kearl QC told Webb: “You have brought disgrace upon yourself and upon the police service for whom you served many years, and you have undermined public confidence in our police service.”

Well I would implore the people of Sheffield not to tar all police officers with the same brush. Police officers are human beings, and I cannot think of another human being who would even contemplate turning over a 94-year-old widow.
