The release of the new season’s football fixtures are always a time when every supporter looks ahead to the coming campaign with renewed optimism.

There’s a sense in our area of real excitement before the action begins on Saturday, August 9.

Sheffield United will be the first to get underway as their match against Bristol City at Bramall Lane has moved to a 12.15pm kick-off and will be televised.

The rest of our teams begin later in the day and all will have hopes of having a good season.

Sheffield Wednesday have been joined by Rotherham United in the Championship after the Millers sensational victory in the Play-off final at Wembley.

Their two games at Hillsborough on November 8 and New York Stadium on March 21 will be eagerly anticipated by both sets of fans.

Perhaps the most competitive division for local bragging rights will be League One where the Blades, Barnsley, Doncaster Rovers and Chesterfield will all meet.

It will seem as though there is a derby match every, which should make for some exciting games.

We wish all our teams well for the season. The drama will begin soon and The Star will be there every step of the way.
