We’ve spoken to some of the top people – from business secretary Vince Cable down – to set the stage for 2015.

Compared to last year when the key words were ‘green shoots’ this edition is rammed with good news on the jobs front.

After a long lull, companies are hiring and investing and the publication offers an insight into the state of sectors including law, finance, commercial property, architecture, digital and creative, training and manufacturing.

It also sets out the state of play within the Local Enterprise Partnership, which is riding high after a devolution deal – only the second after Manchester – as well as a £320m Growth Deal, one of the biggest in the country.

It all sounds rosy – but of course it’s never that simple.

The pull-out also reveals the challenges our region still faces including a lack of investment in skills, jobs and equipment.

But optimism returns in the eight-page Rising Stars section which celebrates the companies and people who are on the up.
