Opinion: College’s golden era

After a blistering summer of sports success in Sheffield - most notably the Tour de France - going for gold has become a common theme for our city.

Just as we celebrated the good work done by those who brought the world’s biggest bike race here, so too, must we toast success in every field.

Handsworth Grange Community Sports College has become the first educational outfit in the city to be handed the gold standard for careers support - read the full story on page 19.

The award outlines the brilliant work the school has done to boost the employment prospects of every pupil who comes through its doors.

After one of the deepest recessions ever, it has never been more important to make sure kids have their career prospects in mind at school to ensure a solid start in the world of work - and Handsworth has beaten out schools and colleges across the city when it comes to careers support.

Coming less than a year after the school’s best ever GCSE results, the gong proves those with the will to succeed in SHeffield can, and serves as a great lesson to the whole city - let’s all go for gold, and make Sheffield a better place to live.
