Opinion: A proud night for the city

Have your say

There are many people, businesses and institutions to be proud of in and around Sheffield.

And very near the top of that list would be Sheffield Children’s Hospital.

It is a world-class facility right on our doorstep, which is the envy of many cities and towns across the country.

Earlier this week the very best of Sheffield came together to raise much-needed money for the hospital’s new extension.

The evening was hosted by five Sheffield men who are the self-entitled ‘Fat Lads of Dore’.

But while it was their event at Abbeydale Golf Club the real stars of the show were their guests who dug deep to raise a staggering £25,000 during an auction of sporting memorabilia and exciting days out.

The generosity showed not only how much people care for the hospital but also how much fundraising is needed to ensure it has the best possible facilities.

It is also worth mentioning the contribution of sports starts Jessica Ennis-Hill, Nick Matthew and Matt Fitzpatrick – all patrons of the hospital’s charity. The three are born, raised, schooled and still live in Sheffield and they conducted themselves with class throughout the evening. Even more for the city to be proud of.
