Protect the vulnerable

The justifiable criticism of police and council chiefs in Rotherham over their response to tackling the sexual exploitation of children must prompt these agencies to do better. They were described as ‘inexcusably slow’ at recognising the extent of the problem and missed opportunities to help. Such a poor response left vulnerable children unprotected, which is simply not good enough. This crime affects those least able to defend themselves and they deserve better from agencies designed to protect them. We hope lessons have been learned and want to see evidence of more cases reaching court. Only this will send out a clear message to offenders that their appalling crimes will not be tolerated because the authorities are willing and determined to punish them.

Dedicated volunteers

Dedication is what sums up the efforts of volunteers who have spent the last 35 years helping keep this city’s landscape looking so lovely. You name it, they do it, whether its planting, cleaning, building or clearing. Every weekend they are out there, dedicated to making and keeping this city looking its best. The Sheffield Conservation Volunteers clearly enjoy their work, and their skills have made a fabulous contribution to what marks Sheffield apart from so many other cities.

First class business

The best Post Office in Yorkshire is right here in Sheffield. Lower Bradfield is the lovely location and its Post Office is run by Heather Tingle, who deserves great credit for making her business an important part of village life. This is a great example of how being friendly, convenient and supporting other local businesses pays off. Heather and her team have clearly earned their accolade and we hope the Post Office and adjoining shop and tearoom continue to thrive.
