Leading the world over
An investment of £43m is significant at any time – but while we are still in recession, it represents a massive vote of confidence in the excellence demonstrated at our Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre. It will pave the way for the world’s most flexible factory to drive innovation in manufacturing. That is a huge boost to the region and underlines what the AMRC with Boeing, run by the University of Sheffield, has represents. The AMRC is already seen as the model for research centres across the world. The university was named University of the Year by the Times Higher Education guide and 70 of the world’s leading companies recognise the excellence that comes from the AMRC. Which is why £43m is about to flow into the Sheffield City Region.
College is a class act
When the city’s biggest further education college gets a thumbs-up from inspectors it is a reason for us all to say well done. More than 20,000 students are enrolled there and the verdict is that they are receiving good standards of education. Importantly, last year nine out of 10 students went on into jobs, apprenticeships or higher education. No wonder our MPs have welcomed the report. This is a tribute to the hard work and commitment of staff.
Remember our heroes
We must never forget our D-Day heroes and the sight of Normandy veterans bearing their standards in the city centre gave us all a reason to stop and reflect on their deeds. These men played their part in a historic day which shaped the destiny of World War Two. They deserve our respect. Next year is the 70th anniversary of D-Day and we hope more people will join the veterans and pay tribute to their heroism.
