The one-off Christmas special of classic Doncaster sitcom Open All Hours will be screened on Boxing Day, the BBC has announced.

The much-heralded show will be screened at 7.45pm on December 26 on BBC1, the corporation has announced.

It comes as filming of studio scenes for the show got under way today.

Stars including Sir David Jason, Lynda Baron and Stephanie Cole are filming interior shots at Salford’s Media City today and tomorrow in front of a live studio audience.

The show is set to be one of the big hits of the BBCs Christmas schedule.

Last month, the streets of Balby were brought to a standstill as the stars of the much-loved sitcom returned to Doncaster for the first time in almost 30 years.

Scenes were filmed at the hairdressing salon in Lister Avenue which was transformed into Arkwright’s cluttered corner shop for a three-day location shoot.

Comedy stars Johnny Vegas, Mark Williams and the Chuckle Brothers’ Barry Chuckle were also involved in filming for the one-off special, which sees Granville having inherited the shop from his miserly uncle Arkwright.

Arkwright was played in the original series by the late Ronnie Barker.

Few details have been released about the script for the new show, but Granville has now been joined by his son behind the counter.

The BBC has revealed more than 26,000 people applied for free tickets to see the studio sequences being filmed – with just under 300 lucky fans getting their hands on tickets.

An accompanying documentary, revealing how the show, penned by original writer Roy Clarke returned to screens, will also be shown over the festive period.
