Old school ties itself to Sam's bid for Pop Idol win

POP IDOL finalist Sam Nixon rules this school – even though he left over a year ago!

The 17-year-old is receiving the full support of his former teachers and the pupils at Holgate School, Shaw Lane, Barnsley, as he bids to become Britain's next singing sensation.

Staff called The Star after seeing our Vote Sam posters on the ITV show, and asked for copies to display in school windows and classrooms.

When we arrived, excited students raced to grab their copy – making Sam the pupils' number one pin-up!

Sam's former teachers have also been wearing Star T-shirts supporting the singing chef, who was in his second year of a catering course at Barnsley College when he first got a taste of fame.

They were among the estimated 2,000 fans who turned up to see him perform at Barnsley's Alhambra Centre earlier this week.

As he appeared on stage one student threw a Holgate School tie to Sam, who shouted to his parents: "Look mum, I've got my old school tie back!"

Sam is the bookies' favourite to win the competition but his fans are determined not to take his success for granted.

They say they will be jamming the Pop Idol switchboard on Saturday's big band themed show to make sure he stays in the competition.

School librarian Sue Smith said: "We've been watching Sam since the very start of Pop Idol and we'll be watching him perform again on Saturday night.

"We wish him all the luck in the world."

n If Sam's fans help him get through Saturday's heat, The Star will offer readers another chance to get their hands on a Vote Sam poster next week, as well as an extra special offer in Monday night's Star.
