Old-fashioned copper back from 'dead' to win award
A POPULAR police officer who had to issue a statement last year to quash rumours he had died has been presented with an award for working with a parish council for the last 17 years.
PC Peter Booth received his award from Ecclesfield Parish Council as a thank- you for his efforts in the community.
Last year unfounded rumours began to circulate that he had been killed in a road accident. There were so many calls to South Yorkshire Police, the control room had to contact his family to check he was still alive.
Coun Howard House, presenting the chairman's award, said: "Peter has been a highly respected police officer in our community for many years and has had the respect of both younger and older parishioners.
"His services to the community in the Chapeltown area for so many years are very much appreciated which is why I decided to present him with the chairman's award."
Coun Alan Hooper said: "Peter has been popular and respected by all members of the community especially young people and he is a throw back to the old-fashioned type of policeman."
PC Booth said: "I was very pleased and surprised to receive the award. It is very kind of the parish council.
"I've been involved with the parish council ever since I took up the post of community police officer in Chapeltown 17 years ago in 1993.
"I have completed a total of 30 years service with South Yorkshire Police, 17 of those years in Chapeltown and High Green. Prior to this I was local officer in Shiregreen for 11 years.
"I feel very honoured with the award. Although I have completed 30 years service I have no plans to retire just yet."
