FAMILIES enjoyed a fun-packed visit to the seaside - thanks a building firm.

Rotherham Deputy Mayor Coun Dave Pickering took 14 families from the town, who needed a break for a day, to Scarborough.

They were welcomed by the Lord and Lady Mayor of Scarborough where they enjoyed a host of activities, including face painting, donkey rides, treasure hunt, sandcastle competition, an arts and craft tent and games area.

Allan Jackson, chairman of Rotherham Holiday Aid, a charity which helped fund the trip, said: “It will have been the first time that some of these children have ever seen the sea, eaten fish and chips, or candy floss, and built a sand castle.

“Some people might not see the trip as being significant, but it will have made a real difference to the lives of the children who took part in this outing.”

The trip was organised as part of Wilmott Dixon’s Community Day initiative.

Community officer Michael Pearson said: “Children need to play and interact with each other because the activity is essential for their health, well-being and happiness.”
