Nursing home's care claim

MANAGERS at a Sheffield nursing home where a grandmother developed the worst type of pressure sore - and died in hospital - insisted they aim to offer a 'high standard of care'.

The family of Doreen Betts, who lived at Kersal Mount Nursing Home, Broomhill, are considering legal action against the home after an inquest heard the 78-year-old died from sepsis, a serious infection caused by a pressure sore on her foot.

The inquest heard that when Mrs Betts was admitted to hospital she had the worst type of pressure sore - a grade four that had penetrated so deeply it had reached the bone.

Mrs Betts' son, Stephen Betts and daughter Joanne Thompson are considering suing the Manchester Road home, after hearing at the inquest that it had not arranged a visit from a sores expert as advised by her GP, three months before she died.

A spokeswoman at Kersal Mount said: "Management and staff of Kersal Mount Care Home would like to offer our sincere condolences to the family of Mrs Betts.

"At Kersal Mount we aim to offer a high standard of care to all our residents at all times.

"We strive to provide a safe, relaxed and homely environment in which the care, wellbeing and comfort of our residents is of prime importance.

"We strive at all times to preserve the dignity, individuality and privacy of residents and in doing so are ensure that their care and nursing needs are met at all times."

She said procedures are regularly reviewed at the home as part of the care planning process, but would not comment further on Mrs Betts' case for legal reasons.
