Not far enough

Have your say

It is hard to read Terry Palmer’s letter (May 12) without concluding that he believes ex-Cabinet minister David Laws was treated leniently compared with ex-MP Eric Illsley because he is a toff and a homosexual. Some very posh establishment figures have had their collars felt in recent times, but I am happy to let that go by. But why does he have to call Laws a ‘homosexual ex-MP’? If Laws had been black, female or disabled I doubt he would have mentioned it. Laws’s behaviour would have been just as reprehensible if he’d been heterosexual. The tragedy is that such a talented man felt the need to hide the fact that he had a gay partner. We’ve come a long way to accepting one’s sexuality is an irrelevance but not far enough.

Making it up

I KEEP hearing how Labour councillors plan to ‘reverse the cuts’. Yet a couple of weeks ago they were saying the Lib Dems had put off the tough decisions. Is it just me or is someone telling porkies?

I suspect - as per usual - Labour councillors are making it up as they go along.
