BARNSLEY Council leader Steve Houghton said South Yorkshire people were uninterested in the AV vote in a time of swingeing cuts.
The Labour man said: “They are telling us on the doorstep, ‘What is this all about? Why can’t things just stay the way they are?’
“The most important thing in any democracy people need to understand how people have won.”
He added: “The most important thing at the moment in this part of the world is the cuts.
“People want the Government to take a more measured approach.”
Labour were expected to hold onto Barnsley Council.
Barnsley Council has announced it will cut £40 million over the next four years at the cost of 1,200 jobs.
