A MAN was seriously injured after he was struck by a car as he tried to cross a road in Rotherham.

The 65-year-old, from Rotherham, was hit by a blue Ford Mondeo on Moorgate Street.

Police said the car was being driven by a 19-year-old man who had turned right from Mansfield Road onto Moorgate Street.

The pedestrian suffered a head injury and broken leg and is being treated in Rotherham District General Hospital.

Witnesses to the collision, at around 3pm on Thursday, should call South Yorkshire Police on 101 quoting incident 625 of November 17.

Conmen raid home

TWO men posing as water board officials stole property from a house on Chantrey Road, Woodseats, Sheffield, after talking their way inside.

The con-artists took cash from an 86-year-old man’s house at 1.15pm on Thursday and a short time later a man, again claiming to be from the water board, stole jewellery from a 64-year-old woman on Abbey Brook Gardens, Meadowhead. Anyone with information should call police on 101.

Jail for burglar

A BURGLAR has been jailed for three years for his third similar offence. Mark Meikleham, aged 31, of Burlington Avenue, Langwith Junction, broke into a house on Market Close, Shirebrook, and stole medication. He was arrested after his fingerprint was found on an empty tablet box. Meikleham pleaded guilty to burglary. His sentence will be served concurrently to one he is already serving.

Alcohol shop test

SPOT check visits to a dozen off-licences in Woodhouse and Mosborough found 10 refused to serve under- age customers. The two shops caught selling alcohol to children were warned they face a fine. Insp Jason Booth said: “It is essential licensed premises act responsibly. We also ask the public to decline requests outside off licences to purchase alcohol.”

Shoplifters targeted

SHOPLIFTERS are being targeted by police in Barnsley town centre, where the issue has been made a policing priority. Over the last two weeks 17 thieves have been caught.

Blaze car destroyed

A CAR was destroyed after it was set alight on Busk Meadows, Shirecliffe, Sheffield. The car is believed to have been stolen.
