News In Brief: Road surfacing work overnight

WORK begins today to resurface the A616 road at Wortley near Barnsley.

The work, which will provide an improved road surface for drivers, should be completed by Friday, and will be carried out overnight between 8pm and 6am.

However, the Highways Agency said it will be necessary to close the slip road between the A616 and A629. Diversions will be in place.

‘Toxic’ drums fear

FIREFIGHTERS were called out in their specialist chemical suits after a number of drums, with the word ‘toxic’ written across them, were found dumped at the side of a road.

The drums were spotted on Burlington Avenue, Langwith, at 7.20pm on Friday but when firefighters checked they were empty and deemed to be safe.

Truck flames spread

FLAMES from a pick-up truck which caught fire due to an engine fault on Tennyson Road, Herringthorpe, Rotherham, spread to the guttering of the house it was parked outside at 1.50am on Wednesday.
