NEWS IN BRIEF: Residents face flats evacuation

RESIDENTS at a block of flats in Rotherham had to leave their properties after arsonists set fire to rubbish in a corridor.

Firefighters were called to the block on Lapwater Walk, Wingfield, at around 4.25am yesterday morning.

Residents were asked to stay on their balconies while the flames were extinguished, as smoke had spread to six neighbouring flats.

A woman needed oxygen at the scene after inhaling smoke, but didn’t require hospital treatment.

Vehicle set alight

FIREFIGHTERS were called to Moorland Road, in Gleadless, Sheffield, after a car was torched deliberately.

The black Kia car went up in flames at around 5am yesterday. Meanwhile an accidental car fire happened on Fleury Road, Gleadless, at 6pm on Thursday.

The Vauxhall Calibra was put out by a fire crew from Mansfield Road station.

Deliberate fire

A BLAZE was started deliberately outside a house on Doncaster Road, Wath-upon-Dearne, when arsonists set a pile of rubbish on fire.

The fire damaged a fence and a drainpipe but didn’t spread to the semi-detached property. Firefighters from Dearne station were called out at around 5.30am yesterday.

Chip shop blaze

A FIRE broke out in a ventilation pipe at a fish and chip shop in Eckington yesterday afternoon.

Crews from Staveley and Chesterfield were called to the two-storey building on Market Street at midday, and used water jets to extinguish the fire.

Rubbish in flames

FIREFIGHTERS put out a pile of burning rubbish on a patch of open ground in Shirebrook on Thursday night.

The fire broke out on Leen Valley Drive at around 8.40pm, and crew members used buckets of water to douse the flames.

Diabetes support

PEOPLE with diabetes can seek support at a monthly meeting. Diabetes Support meets on the first Thursday of every month at Shiregreen Neighbourhood Centre, Westnall Road, Sheffield from 11am until 1pm.
