POLICE are urging fun-seekers to keep out of reservoirs and open water during hot weather - and to use supervised swimming pools instead.
South Yorkshire Police said bank holidays and warm weather usually result in an ‘annual influx of would-be swimmers’ especially at Manvers Lake, Thrybergh Country Park and other areas of open water in Rotherham.
A spokeswoman said swimming in open water entails dangers including temperatures cold enough to cause numbness, panic and hypothermia, hidden obstacles or toxins in the water, and steep slippery sides making it hard to climb out.
