NEWS IN BRIEF: Helicopter spots loitering youths

THE police helicopter was called out to help search for a group of suspicious youths seen loitering on school grounds in Foxhill, Sheffield.

Officers in the helicopter spotted two of the youths and directed colleagues on the ground, who made the young people disperse at 8.15pm on Friday.

The chopper was also needed earlier in the day at around 3.15pm, following a report of a burglary in Mosborough.

Three suspects were later arrested after being seen in the area from the air.

Man fell into pond

A MAN was taken to hospital after being pulled from a fishing pond.

Fire crews from Chesterfield, Matlock and Clay Cross were called to McGregor’s Pond, off McGregor’s Way, Chesterfield.

A fire service spokeswoman said officers rescued the male casualty from the bank of the pond, before helping convey him to hospital at 3pm on Sunday.

Woodchips on fire

FIREFIGHTERS were called to deal with 20 tonnes of blazing woodchip in South Yorkshire farmland.

Crews from Dearne and Edlington fire stations attended the fire on Pasture Lane, off the A635 between Darfield and Goldthorpe, Barnsley, just before 6am yesterday.

They had to call the council to supply a digger so they could break up the stacked pile.

Quad bikes burned

TWO quad bikes were set alight in Sheffield on Sunday night and yesterday morning.

Fire crews were called to extinguish a burning machine on Manor Oaks Road, Wybourn, at 8pm.

They were then called to Northern Avenue, Arbourthorne, at 3am the next morning, where another quad bike was blazing.

Car caught fire

A CAR engine went up in flames on the M1 near Chesterfield. Two fire crews, from Chesterfield and Alfreton, were called to the side of the motorway, on the southbound carriageway between junctions 29 and 28, at 10am on Sunday.

Vehicle set alight

A CAR was set alight at Guildford Avenue, Norfolk Park, Sheffield at 2.55am yesterday.
