A THIEF from Sheffield who stole a community centre’s Christmas lights will help to take them down as part of his punishment.

The 23-year-old stole the lights from a tree outside Cortonwood Comeback Centre in Brampton - but was tracked down and returned them. He has now agreed to voluntary work as part of ‘restorative justice’.

JP dies aged 91

A FORMER Sheffield magistrate has passed away aged 91. Mary Gregory was a JP in the Sheffield area, and lived in Todwick. A funeral service will take place at Todwick Church next Monday, January 9, at 10.20am, followed by cremation at Rotherham Crematorium at 11.40am.

Car found alight

FIREFIGHTERS in Sheffield were called out to a car found alight on Borrowdale Avenue, Halfway, and another on Bernshall Crescent, Parson Cross, on New Year’s Day. They were also called out to deal with a car which caught fire after overturning on Pasture Lane, Mexborough.

Chemist’s saved

A PHARMACY has been saved after being bought out by another firm. Knollbeck Pharmacy on Knollbeck Lane in Brampton, Rotherham, was due to stop trading soon but has been acquired by JM McGill Ltd, and will be refurbished and the jobs protected.

Bus driver strike

STAGECOACH bus drivers in Barnsley will strike tomorrow and again on January 16 in their ongoing industrial action, called by Unite members, over pay. The company has drafted in 100 extra drivers to try to keep services running as normal.

Clegg gets pants

CAMPAIGNERS from dads’ group New Fathers 4 Justice sent a New Year message attached to Y-fronts to Sheffield Hallam MP Nick Clegg. The message pinned to the underpants called on politicians to ‘give dads equal rights’.

A MOTORIST who ran away from his vehicle after a collision in Aston, Rotherham, on New Year’s Day gave himself up during a police pursuit.

Officers on the ground were helped by the police helicopter above.

A COUPLE in their 60s were taken to hospital after their Christmas tree caught fire accidentally. The fire brigade was called to Barber Street, Hoyland, Barnsley, on Boxing Day.
