NEWS IN BRIEF: Change bad road habits to save lives

DRIVERS, pedestrians and cyclists are being urged to change bad habits – and save lives on the roads this year.

South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership said failing to look properly is the most frequent contributory factor in collisions – and that pedestrians should be extra wary when listening to music on earphones.

Handbrake warning

A MOTORIST has been given a police warning after he was caught doing handbrake turns and wheel spins in his car. If the man is caught causing a nuisance in his vehicle again in the next 12 months police have the right to seize it. Officers stopped the man on Recreation Close, Clowne, Chesterfield.

Clothes bin ablaze

A CLOTHES recycling bin was destroyed in Mallin Croft, Hoyland, Barnsley, on the same night an industrial waste bin went up in flames on nearby Hall Street. Firefighters from Tankersley were called out to both incidents.

Honda set alight

A HONDA Civic found burning on Grimsell Drive, Birley Edge, Sheffield, had been set alight deliberately. A skip found burning in Rawson Spring Road, Owlerton, Sheffield, had also been torched by arsonists.

Change room fire

A PORTABLE cabin used as a changing room next to a football pitch on Lodge Lane, Aston, went up in flames yesterday morning after an arson attack. Firefighters tackled the blaze.

Garages burgled

TWO garages on Shirebrook Road, Heeley, Sheffield, were broken into last Friday afternoon. A garage on Bradway Road, Bradway, has also been broken into.

Break-in probed

A POLICE probe is under way into a break-in of an unoccupied house on Batemoor Road, Batemoor, Sheffield. Anyone with information should call South Yorkshire Police on 101.

Woman cut free

A WOMAN was cut free from her car after a collision in Sheffield yesterday morning.

The 36-year-old was driving a Honda Civic along Ridgeway Road when she was involved in a collision with a VW Polo. She was taken to hospital as a precaution.
