Two men charged over pub burglary

Two men have been charged with burglary after a break-in at a town centre pub.

Police say the door of the premises in Hall Gate, Doncaster, was forced and cash taken from gaming machines.

A 31-year-old man was remanded in custody and a 39-year-old was bailed.

They are due to apepar before magistrates again on Friday, December 7.

Charity star night

Join the RSPB and Mexborough and Swinton Astronomical Society for a more in depth evening of stargazing.

Extended talks, a stellarium demonstration, star-gazing and a pie and pea supper are on offer, while participants will be able to quiz astronomers about the wonders of the universe.

All proceeds will be split between the two charities.

Tickets for the event, on Saturday, November 17, at 6pm, priced £15, are limited so booking is essential.

Top of the shops

Doncaster’s first Top of The Shops awards evening will take place at the Mansion House on Wednesday.

The evening, hosted by Doncaster Council, aims to recognise the town’s retail offerring with prizes for best food and non-food shop, top café and best market stall, among the awards up for grabs.

Mayor Peter Davies and Julie Wilson, who runs the council’s Success Doncaster programme, head the dignitaries presenting the awards.

Dressing gown day

Staff at a Doncaster nursing home turned up for work ready for bed, all in a good cause.

The team at Amethyst House Care Home in Rossington paid £1 and turned up for their shifts on Halloween dressed in their pyjamas.

A coffee morning with cakes provided by staff and relatives added to the fun and in all helped raise £63 for the residents’ comfort fund.

Run the World ball

A trained firefighter and talented sportsman is using a ball of a different kind to raise cash for charity.

Andrew Landells has organised the Run the World Ball at the Earl of Doncaster Hotel, Bennetthorpe, on Friday, November 16, in aid of Mencap.

The winner of the Sporting Hero category of the recent Pride in Doncaster awards also plans to run the gruelling Marathon Des Sables, a 150-mile trek across the Sahara Desert in aid of the charity next year.
