New owner wanted for ‘adorable’ Kira
Kira the Akita
CUDDLY akita Kira needs a new home and RSPCA Sheffield animal care manager Tony Benham believes she will make the perfect pet for the right person.
He said: “Kira is a gorgeous-looking white Akita, with a gentle and mature nature.
“She came in January with her three stunning pups, who have flown out to new homes. Now, after all her hard work rearing her pups, she needs a home of her own.
“She looks at you with her wise eyes and is appealing.
“We’ve noticed how little she barks at people as they walk around our centre trying to find the right dog for them, and it’s as if she really wants to be chosen by someone.
“We’re puzzled why she hasn’t yet found the person to adopt her. She is adorable.”
Staff at the centre in Stadium Way, Attercliffe, believe Kira is aged about six would be best as an only pet.
She likes to go on long walks and have her fur groomed and pampered. She would be fine with older children.
Tony said: “Kira is very affectionate. Her owner could no longer take care of her through no fault of her own.
“She is house trained and looking for people who would like a dog that likes lots of fuss and attention.”

Monday, February 20, 2012 at 02:17 AMActually Archangel the Akita is a hunting dog which is a BIG difference from a attack dog. I have had few of them and like all dogs if they are socialized correctly when young they are great pets. Akita are know not to bark unless they are being protective of their owner. They due tend to "Talk" when playing. They are truly one of the most interesting breed of dogs. And 2 joseramirez you have no clue what you are talking about. If a dog is mean or misbehaves blame the owner out the dog. I would love for you me meet my two akita right now and you would have complete change of heart.

Saturday, February 18, 2012 at 01:32 PMOh dear... as per people are judging this beautiful animal solely on reputation for a change. Why don't people realise that A dogs behaviour is how down to how it was brought up?? It really annoys me that people instantly judge just because of some story. Not all akita, staffy, rotty etc owners are headcases & breed their dogs to attackbe aggressive. Some people actually care about animals, therefore resulting in a lovely tempered animal. If you're going to abusewind the dog up or let a child constantly rag it about then you know whats going to happen. If we could afford it, I would gladly take this gorgeous dog in.

Saturday, February 18, 2012 at 12:14 PMI am no expert on this breed or any other. Though i agree we shouldnt attribute human charcteristics to dogs, i would also say different individuals of a species do have different characterstemperaments. I have met friendly goats and cows as well as dogs, cats and hamsters. Equally i have met their counterparts, members of the same species who are bad tempered and difficult despite living in the same place and being treated the same. I think it is unfair to label a breed dangerous. All animals can be dangerous in certain circumstances just as people can. James Herriot was killed by a Sheep i think? Not a week seems to pass without news of a young person being stabbed or shot by another. These are a very small minority, we dont hear about the majority of ordinary young people so our perception is altered. I think most dogs are ok too, and maybe the ones that arent is more to do with how they have been treated. I agree that dogs should be kept away from small children and on a lead, thats what i do.

Friday, February 17, 2012 at 10:00 AMAkitas are attack dogs, its in their nature, what they are bred for. Its their default setting. People should stop attributing human characteristics to animals, they do not posssess them. I had a fantastic dog for 16 years, he was a DOG, not a human.

Thursday, February 16, 2012 at 08:44 PMKira is lovely. I have seen her up close. I trust the RSPCA staffs assessments of their animals too. Just over a week ago i walked past the RSPCA and saw a dog being walked by one of the staff, i had a chat, and started thinking we could provide a home... That night I had a look at the website and read the profiles of dogs available. One had the craziest picture, like a deranged scooby doo, and thats who we ended up with. The write up of his temperament was spot on. Next day went to have a look at the dogs awaiting adoption. They were all lovely, cute small ones, really affectionate ones, young ones... We had decided on a big dog as our last one was a german shephard cross, and there he was a GSx with a nice temperament. If he hadnt have been there we would probably have taken Kira home. Having never visited the RSPCA before i was surprised by how nice a place it is and how friendly and helpful the staff are. Not sure what i had expected. They let us meet our Dog, had a chat about his history and arranged for a home visit to check our suitability. Next day on the way to work i saw a big white dog being walked around the RSPCA grounds. It was well behaved and calm and i thought it was the one we were waiting to take home. When i got closer i realised it was Kira as she is a beautiful white colour rather than the creamy brown of ours. After having our dog at home for a week I know he has a gentle nature, he is fine with people and i wouldnt be without him, he is great company. If you can, give Kira a chance. I believe she is a calm friendly dog too, just like ours Go meet her, talk to the RSPCA staff who know her. Or maybe go see one of the other dogs, cats, rabbits....
