New deacons to be ordained
A NURSE, a teaching assistant and a DIY store worker are all being ordained as church deacons in Sheffield.
Diabetes specialist nurse Monica Sutton, former teaching assistant Hilda Isaacson, and former B&Q worker Gina Kalsi will be ordained by the Bishop of Sheffield Dr Steven Croft on Sunday July 5 at 6.30pm.
Monica, aged 61, from Cyprus Terrace, Walkley, will serve as a curate in the parish of St Cuthbert, Fir Vale, where she will work with the vicar to provide a Christian presence in the local community.
Monica, who is originally from London, said: "The call to ordination came as a shock to me but I am filled with excitement, wonder, and a degree of trepidation." Following her ordination she will continue to work at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital as a member of the diabetes specialist team. Gina, 40, who lives in Burgoyne Road, Walkley, is married with two children.
She said: "I moved to Sheffield six years ago and had been here for two years when I decided it was time for me to start exploring the church. I'm very excited to become deacon at St Stephen's Church in Netherthorpe."
Hilda, from Rotherham, will serve as curate at St John the Evangelist, Deepcar.
She recently completed her training with the Yorkshire Ministry Course to serve as a Church of England minister, and will be a deacon for the first year.
She will assist in leading worship, preparing people for baptisms and weddings, and help those who are bereaved in the community.
She said: "I am looking forward to working with the people of Deepcar and renewing my connections with the area, as I worked there in the 1980s when I first moved to Sheffield."
Hilda, is married with three grown-up children and in her spare time enjoys gardening, walking, music, reading and cooking.
