New website to help back sufferers manage their pain

HEALTH care specialists in Sheffield have teamed up to develop a website for the thousands of city residents who suffer from back pain.

The website features local celebrities including David Blunkett, BBC Radio Sheffield presenter Toby Foster and Calendar weather girl Kerrie Gosney.

There are hints, tips and short vidoes providing practical information on safely managing back pain at home and at work.

Sheffield GP and back pain specialist Ollie Hart said: "There is a huge variety of care currently available for people with back pain in Sheffield. This approach aims to encourage people to manage their own back pain where possible and to create a gold standard of provision if they need extra, professional help."

Dr Hart, a chronic pain specialist with Central Sheffield GP Consortium added: "We all know how debilitating and potentially depressing back pain can be but it is a fact of life for many of us.

"We want to encourage people to know when to safely manage their backs and ensure when they do need extra help, the right person is there at the right time."

The website - www.sheffieldbackpain.com - has sections for patients, employers and health care professionals.

It has been developed over the last 18 months by GPs, physiotherapists, chiropractors and osteopaths working with hospital-based specialists in orthopaedics, rheumatology and radiology.
