A new safer route for the Trans Pennine Trail connecting Cortonwood and Gypsy Marsh is to be opened officially tomorrow.
For many years users of the trail had difficulty crossing over the Cortonwood retail park entrance road at busy times. Barnsley Council and trail organisers have been working to resolve the problem within the landscape and financial restrictions available.
The new route avoids the Cortonwood road crossing by going beneath Dearne Valley Parkway, then through the trees between the disused canal and main road, crossing over the Wombwell bypass via a new crossing, and rejoining the main trail near Gypsy Marsh.
Funding for the project has been provided by grants, and work has been completed ready for Easter.
