A new system for bus services is needed to end more ‘rip off fare rises’, shadow transport secretary Michael Dugher said.
Mr Dugher, who is defending Barnsley East for Labour in the general election, spoke as bus operator Stagecoach prepares to increase prices from Sunday April 12.
His party is promising to give transport authorities outside London more powers to re-regulate bus services through a Quality Contract.
Mr Dugher said: “It’s clear that like the energy market, the bus market is broken. Routes are being cut while companies like Stagecoach are putting fares up yet again in Barnsley. That’s why I want to see local regions given the power to bring an end to big bus companies calling all the shots and an end to more rip-off fare rises.”
